The Shropshire Union Canal-Part 1

Its goodbye to Nantwich and hello to ......

a couple of hitchhikers...

It might be raining but at least the locks at Hack Green are set in our favour.

Next is Audlem flight of 15 locks which takes the canal across the Shropshire/Cheshire border.

Alas Georges Pork & Poultry is no longer-on our last visit this was a busy butchers and market garden but  closed after some dispute with Canal & River Trust.

Its now pouring with rain......

Audulem Wharf- one of the prettiest ports of call on the Shroppie-  a former warehouse restored as a pub and the mill converted into a craft shop.

Lock 11 is only negotiated after Trev has done some nifty tiller work to get us past this flowing by-wash.

Apart from the first lock we have had to empty each lock before we can go in so we are pleased to meet a couple of boats coming down the flight....if only that darn boat infront wasn't there!!!

At last we reach the top and are well tempted by some canalside fare.

Time to catch our breath before we tackle Adderley flight of 5 locks a mile down stream.

Betton Wood and Market Drayton pass by in a haze and it's on to Tyrley Locks - another flight of 5

and a lock wall that has seen better days

Woodseaves cutting is next

cut through solid rock in places

and narrow with a pair of high bridges

just the place to meet another boat!!!

After 27 locks and 15 miles in 10 hours we moor for the night at Goldstone Wharf...with the aide of the plank!!!
