Mountsorrel to Loughborough

Its time to "grease the nipples", check on the stern gland, Trev is mopping daily and will be glad when we are out of the water and its fixed.  We seem to have developed another minor oil leak.

Mountsorrel has been a quarrying centre for many years, the local granite being used for kerb and paving stones. Hard wearing and pinkish in colour, they were once carried far and wide by water transport. In 1860 a massive railway bridge was built to capture much of the navigations transport monopoly.  Nowadays the stone goes over to the railway sidings by conveyor belt.

Deep Barrow Lock had a fall of nine foot seven and a set of colour light signals which turn red when the current in the river precludes safe boating.

Exiting the lock

Pillings flood lock, one we didn't have to do as the gates are usually open during the summer months.

Approaching Loughborough.
